editor’s note:
This is a story about a boot camp event that took place in 2018. While your window of opportunity has passed, we have events like this about once a season. Please visit scul.org to learn more about the gang, and to contact us.
What is SCUL?
SCUL is a merry band of highly trained star pilots, building and testing the limits of our experimental and augmented ships on late Saturnight missions, exploring the greater Boston and New Bedford systems and beyond, sometimes even in Lithuania. We practice strict flight protocols and work as a unit to fly with style as best we can. We are a highly organized battalion of funk.
We have been engaging in heavily documented patrol missions since Earth Year 1996. It’s tons of hard work, and danger is everywhere. Some of our ships cockpits can be an ‘acquired taste’, and SCUL ships require more thrust and coordination than stock-civilian vessels. But it’s all paid back fivefold in fun. Don’t worry, we’ve got some fun easy ships too!
The motto of SCUL is
‘Be a Superhero Version of Yourself.’
How do I become a SCUL pilot?
In order to become a SCUL pilot, you must be trained to be a SCUL pilot. The first step is to sign up for boot camp: Fleet Admiral Skunk will show you the basic ropes, then take you out on a training exercise. Extra credit goes to recruits who practice riding awesome ahead of time.
Check out some pilots, ships, and missions on scul.org to get a sense of our roles, methods, and SCULture. Think of a new call sign for your new superhero identity. No ‘civi’ names, please!
The first rule of SCUL: BE ON TIME. We are strict about this and will send you away if you are late. NO EXCEPTIONS.
What is SCUL’s Mission?
- To create, maintain, use and abuse organically-powered starships
- To thoroughly enjoy the perils of space travel
- To foster and nurture creativity and personal freedom with the camaraderie of fellow pilots
- To BUST THE FUNK
What is it like to be a SCUL pilot?
A pilot is highly trained and ready to fly in all foreseeable mission weather when the klaxon sounds. They make the most of life in space, even when the inevitable mechanical stops us – we fly as a unit and leave no one behind. Some SCUL pilots hack things up and put them back together all funny. SCUL pilots fly on adventurous missions, living life to the marrow and savoring the night. Most of all, being a SCUL pilot is a lot of fun.
